I thought it'd be an excellent idea to make sure we do transcripts of the society meetings and any other videos that we do.

I am in the process of doing a demonstration for the first society meeting (thanks for helping @PrototypeAlex) in which I'll upload the source and such to here.

Regarding why we would do this:

  • Allows a fantastic way to search more in-depth (i.e. you're looking for something in particular, but not quite sure where it was)
  • Great source of meta data
  • Good for people who cannot watch a video, or have sound
  • Does not discriminate or push away people with hearing issues
  • Translating means that our original content can go so much further.

One major translation we could do is Māori, seeing we're in New Zealand!

My ulterior motive though, is to be able to demonstrate and perhaps even improve code for captioning for the main purpose of educating developers / video producers as to why it's something worth doing. At the moment it's almost an afterthought, if it is one at all. Videos are becoming much more popular, and there's an incredible amount of great information on them that so many will miss out on otherwise.

Does anyone have any objections of me doing this, or any advice/constructive feedback?

Awesome idea, but I think it was @buildmaster that helped out here, not me 😄.

Would also be interested in doing this once we get the node.js meetups recorded in Welly.

Nope you wrote the first few minutes, remember?

From: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iwfxFnvKIk&feature=youtu.be&t=720

Alex: Um so I'll... Owen is absent talking to his builder, it
shouldn't take too long and he'll join us when he's finished.
Everyone's Here so we could possibly introduce ourselves. Do you want
to go first Mr Chairman?
Walter: Uh Alright, that's me. I'm walter, I'm a long time JavaScript
developer. I organise the Auckland Javascript Meetup. Umm. that's
probably the most notable thing, I do. I'm happy to hand over to
erm... You can go Alex..
Alex: Cool. So I'm Alex, and I have been I guess the unofficial
Treasurer for the society, I run Nodebots NZ wide and I run the
Wellington Node.js meetup While Graham Jensen is in England and help
out at Summer of Tech in Wellington when I can. Along with working as
a Javascript developer for Atomic. Err I'm Gonna pass it on to Blair.
Blair: (unadible) [Ok I'm Blair, I've been doing Secretary for the
last Year, which has been lots of writing] I'm a developer at Mozilla,
I work on Firefox doing all the User Interface stuff. Um yeah. Jen?
Jen: Cool, ok so I'm Jen. I'm a Javascript dev in Wellington. I work
for Catalyst IT. Been a committe member for Javascript New Zealand now
for about a year now and I do a bunch of mentoring and Training in
Javascript as well as having that as my day job. Lets Say Kevin can go
next.

That was definitely me. Scanning the video and transcribing definitely made me have a new appreciation for how hard it is.

No objections at all to this, my only real concern is time. It's of course valuable but we don't have a huge pot of cash and I don't have a clue how much this would set us back in terms of time/money. Whatever we can do to help though we should.
