Definition: The emission and acceleration of large numbers of energetic charged particles, mainly protons, from the Sun. Sources include solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CME). (https://three.jsc.nasa.gov/articles/Hu-SPEs.pdf).

Synonyms: SPE, solar energetic particle event, SEP.
