Multiplayer possible over LAN with PollyMC on iMac (Java) and registered, purchased MC on iPad (Bedrock)?

I've tried the standard methods available for opening LAN to other players, but haven't had success. My kid wants to join my world on my iMac (I'm using Fabric and Minecraft Java 1.21.3), and he's using an older iPad with a purchased MC Bedrock edition.

Is it even possible to connect over LAN with PollyMC? I believe it should be possible for Java and Bedrock players to play together over LAN.

Do I need a different option? Creating a server?

Step-by-step assistance would be appreciated, if anyone has suggestions. Cheers!
