Without https it's an extended concept only, I'm afraid. But looks promising +1

@ser why do you need https? I mean if you want to encrypt some private data you just have to encrypt/compress it before sharing over Internet. There's no authorization to hide your name or password through https protocol. So if you would use own https certificate every browser will hang up without trusted certificate. And https encryption will consume much more resources.
Ask yourself Why any public cloud services even from Google, MS etc are 'Public'?

So there's other methods to protect your connection:

  1. Protect your sensetive private data locally before sharing.
  2. VPN services.
  3. SSH tunnel.
    ...
