float-mult-spec sporadically fails

We've had a couple of cases where float-mult-spec (part of the nifty new numerics tests by @julia-schor – thanks!) fails sporadically, such as this example:

It happens fairly rarely, and our guess is that the very small (10^-7) value is key to the problem.
