Additional question

Aside from the build error: What is the correct way to reference the sensors and their manifests in node-red-mcu-plugin? To at least make it build, I modified the manifest file manually as shown above.

Instead of using

"C:\\Users\\souls\\Projects\\moddable\\modules\\drivers\\gt911\\manifest.json",

I also tried

"C:\\Users\\souls\\Projects\\moddable\\modules\\drivers\\sensors\\gt911\\manifest.json",

but since this folder does not contain a manifest.json, I created one with following content:

What is the correct way to reference the sensors and their manifests in node-red-mcu-plugin?

These parameters goes to `Config Arguments' - as you already did.

But - there's currently no way implemented to either add additional manifests or parse those options & let the system add necessary manifests.json. Sorry; another topic on the ToDo-List.

It should at least perform a successful (manual) build though if you add those manifests to the include section & run mcconfig from a terminal - again, as you already did.

I'd like to help but I'm not quite sure what this manifest is trying to accomplish. Maybe you could explain the intention? Thank you.

FWIW – The example manifest seems to be including two touch drivers (gt911 and xpt2046), which is already unusual since most embedded devices have, at most, a single touch sensor. The touch drivers included are not ECMA-419 compatible - the ECMA-419 touch sensors are in $MODDABLE/modules/drivers/sensors/.

The touch support is straightforward. It is the wiring of the display that is difficult. It appears to drive the display directly from the ESP32-S3 without a display controller. That's cool, but not something currently supported.

If you are looking to experiment with the UI capabilities of Node-RED MCU, I would strongly encourage you to start with a supported device. There are many ESP32 boards available that work.

Thanks for looking into it. Unfortunately these devices have either

a high price
a poor availability in EU
a very small display
all three above

Maybe I'm a "too early" adopter.
Anyway, hoping to see it evolve into something where the average Joe can quickly come up with interesting smart sensors, flexible IoT displays and control devices etc.

Your vision of the future is what we are working towards. That future will get here sooner with your active engagement. But, to get there, some compromise is necessary too. We can't support every development board, MCU, display, sensor, and Node-RED feature at once. Start with something supported and then expand.

Moddable Two is fully supported by Node-RED MCU Edition. The display and touch drivers work with our Node-RED dashboard implementation. It is the device we use for our primary development. Here's an example from @rei-vilo.
