Dimension coordinate with different dim/coord names

Hi, apologies if this question has been asked before, or if I'm missing something obvious.

I understand that a dimension coordinate is by definition a coordinate array with a dimension by the same name in .dims. I'm wondering if there's any blessed way or workaround to have an associated coordinate/dimension pair where they don't share the same name, without just adding another coord array that will show up as "without dimensions". Or this impossible by design?

E.g. say one wants dimensions named rows/cols but coords row/col or i/j.

IIUC use .set_xindex(row).

Thanks much — that set me on the path. I now think a range (or more specialized) index is what I'm really after.
