SSH connection very unstable when Python extension enabled on linux

My SSH connection with VS code is fine until I install the python extension on the remote machine then it becomes very unstable, causing me to have to reconnect every minute or two. I'm on arch linux, but it sounds like something similar (though less severe) is happening to @brl0 on Windows.

This may be an issue with the python extension itself (microsoft/vscode-python#9942).
