The motivation for creating the Pediatric Labeling Changes Database stems from a desire to ensure that healthcare professionals have access to the most accurate and comprehensive information regarding pediatric medications. As someone who works with children a lot, I understand the importance of having reliable information to make informed medical decisions. Additionally, I have always been intrigued by how medicine changes over time, and this database allows me to contribute to the ongoing improvement of pediatric healthcare by tracking these changes.

The data_load.py
script uses python to handle data loading and database creation, merging data from multiple Excel files into a SQLite database. It uses utility functions defined in utils.py
and the schema defined in schema.sql
. These files can be found in the Database Creation/Scripts
folder. The queries.py
script runs queries on the database using queries.sql
which can be found in the Analytics/Scripts
folder.
The database is implemented using SQLite3. It includes 39 tables with 81 attributes, designed to efficiently manage pediatric labeling changes. The database currently holds 677,950 entries after migrating data from Excel.
Figures, such as the labeling changes per year, are generated using SQL queries and visualized with Python libraries like Matplotlib. The labeling_changes.py
script in the Analytics/Scripts
folder creates the LabelingChangesPerYear.png
figure in the Analytics/Images
folder.
This database will be updated regularly to include the latest pediatric labeling changes and study data. Note that updates may not always coincide with the FDA's quarterly updates; the most up-to-date information can be obtained by running the code yourself.
The data provided offers valuable insights into pediatric labeling changes and helps ensure that health care professionals can make informed decisions about treating pediatric populations.
