Emberfall is a fork of Space Station 14, set in the Aelys system, a distant and contested region of space where corporate interests and planetary resources intersect. Players take on diverse roles aboard an orbital stronghold, navigating the challenges of station operations, corporate rivalry, and survival in space.
The Aelys system, located in the distant reaches of space, is the heart of a corporate struggle that shapes the galaxy's future. Once a relatively quiet system, it has become a battleground over the discovery of Aeonite, a rare material with the potential to revolutionize the world. At the core of this conflict is the planet Virell and its two moons, Tyris and Zyra, which have become vital resources in the fight for control.
Class: Terrestrial
Size: Slightly smaller than Earth
Orbit: Third planet from the system's star
Virell is the only habitable planet in the Aelys system and the only known world with life in it. Its diverse ecosystems, ranging from vast forests and jungles to expansive deserts and towering mountain ranges, have supported a wide variety of life for millennia. Despite its beauty, Virell's true value lies beneath the surface, where the rare and powerful Aeonite was discovered. This material has made Virell a key strategic location for the corporations that dominate the Aelys system.
Virell has a range of climates across its continents, from temperate equatorial zones to frigid northern and southern regions. Its jungles are teeming with wildlife, while its deserts are barren but rich in minerals. The Aelythians have built their cities and settlements to survive in this diverse environment, creating sustainable communities in the planet's various regions.
The inhabitants of Virell are a genetically diverse group of humanoid species known collectively as the Aelythians. Each species has evolved unique traits that reflect their natural habitats and roles within society. This diversity plays a crucial role in shaping the culture and economy.
- Vulpkanins - The most common and widespread subspecies on Virell. They are humanoid canine beings often characterized by fur patterns that vary by region and lineage.
- Moths - Moths are an insectoid species distinguished by their wings and antennae. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, which often reflect their regional origins and heritage. Their wings give them superior control in zero-gravity environments.
- Arachnids - Arachnids are humanoid, spider-like beings. Thanks to their robust digestive systems, they are able to consume raw food without the risk of disease.
- Reptilians - Reptilians are humanoid creatures with scales and often reptile-like features such as tails and sharp claws. They are known for their adaptability to harsh environments.
- Rodentia - Rodentia are humanoid rodents with quick reflexes and a natural curiosity. Their small size and agility make them ideal for roles that require stealth and precision.
In the early 2600s, a series of expeditions sent by private and government-backed organizations explored the planet's subsurface. During these expeditions, they uncovered traces of a strange new material that seemed to have extraordinary energy properties. Further research confirmed that Aeonite was far more potent than anything previously discovered. Aeonite's potential to revolutionize energy, weaponry, and technology has made it a highly sought-after resource.
Before the discovery of Aeonite, the corporations were already establishing their presence on Virell. They were initially focused on exploring the resources of the planet and its moons, but when Aeonite was uncovered, the focus quickly shifted toward securing and controlling the new resource. Solus Concord, Aeon Industries, and VOSS Enterprises were all founded on Virell, but each corporation had different ambitions:
SC started as a military and defense-focused corporation, providing security services for the planet's growing space industry. Their deep-rooted presence and focus on security gave them an advantage when the need to defend Aeonite supplies became a priority.
Aeon was founded on the idea of technological advancement and research. While it initially focused on resource extraction and industry, the discovery of Aeonite led to a shift in focus toward pushing the boundaries of science and technology, including weapons development and sustainable energy.
VOSS was initially a small mining and logistics company, focused on efficiency and cost-effectiveness. With the discovery, they saw an opportunity to expand rapidly, providing critical transport and processing services for the other corporations
Virell is a planet of semi-independent city-states, each with its own local government and police force. While there is a planetary council that theoretically governs all cities, each city-state operates with a high degree of autonomy, with their own laws, political structures and security forces.
The planetary council is a representative body, with each city-state sending its own delegate. However, due to the power of the corporations, many of the council members are either directly appointed by corporate entities or are heavily influenced by them. Though there is a semblance of democracy, in practice, decisions made by the planetary council are often aligned with the corporate interests of Solus Concord, Aeon Industries, and VOSS Enterprises, especially in matters of resource extraction, trade, and security.
While each city-state has its own police force, local law enforcement is often supplemented or overshadowed by the military presence of Solus Concord in the more strategically important cities, such as Eryndor and Ironclad Reach.
Eryndor is the beating heart of Virell, a sprawling metropolis that serves as the planet's capital and economic center. It is the most populous city on the planet, and it houses the planetary government's primary institutions. While Virell is officially a planet-wide collective of city-states, Eryndor acts as the central political and economic hub.
Eryndor's skyline is dominated by sleek, modern skyscrapers towering over its expansive districts. While much of the city reflects the advanced technology of Virell, it's also filled with pockets of older, more traditional areas where older infrastructure and buildings remain. The city is known for its high-tech markets, vast shipping hubs, and thriving cultural scene.
Ironclad Reach is an industrial city located in the northern regions, surrounded by fortifications and military installations. Its economy thrives on the production of weapons and defense technologies.
A futuristic city known for its cutting-edge research and development. Vorellis is a hub of scientific advancement, with a sprawling network of laboratories and high-tech campuses. The city-state operates with a relatively free governance system.
Vayleston is a bustling industrial port city located near Tyris. It serves as the transportation and processing center for much of the Aeonite extracted from the moons.
Located on the continent of Kaldar, Galvorn is a center of commerce, attracting entrepreneurs and traders from across the system. It's known for its vibrant markets and as a point of intersection between the various corporate factions.
Situated in the southern hemisphere, Tandora is a city-state with a reputation for its unique agricultural advancements and sustainable practices. Although its resources are mostly agricultural and eco-focused, Tandora holds strategic importance because of its location near important trade routes.
- The Great Plains - A vast stretch of land where Aeonite veins are most concentrated. This area is heavily guarded and a frequent point of conflict.
- The Shattered Range - A mountainous region, historically significant as the place where Aeonite was first discovered. It is now a militarized zone, with research stations and mining camps dotting the landscape.
Class: Rocky moon
Size: 1/10th of the size of Virell
Orbit: Closest moon of Virell
Tyris is a rocky moon that plays a vital role in the extraction of resources for the system's industrial needs. Its proximity to Virell makes it a natural location for mining operations.
Class: Icy moon
Size: 1/5th of the size of Virell
Orbit: Furthest moon from Virell
Zyra is an icy, frozen moon that remains largely unexplored. Despite its inhospitable conditions, the moon is important due to its geothermal energy resources and the presence of unique minerals.
