Snippets are meant to be used for code that is to be used in different parts of a site. They are based on the MgdSchema midgard_snippet, are organized in Snippetdirs and can be included from Style Elements or Page Elements with mgd_include_snippet.
In MidCOM, Snippets can be used to overwrite a [Component](MidCOM Components)'s default configuration and Datamanager Schemas. In older MidCOM versions (midcom-db), the entire MidCOM framework and its Components were available as Snippets residing in the database.
Apart from that, they usually hold functionality that should be available in different parts of the web site
