Material Components for Web is the next evolution of MDL. The goal was to be a reference implementation of the specification. This move solidifies that. It is currently missing some of the existing MDL components, as MDL v2's work was anyways, since it was undergoing an entire rewrite to facilitate the needs of being a reference implementation.

The move doesn't mean it is stable and ready for use. Material Components for Web is still in alpha stages, so undergoing very heavy development still. Once it goes stable, we should have near complete feature parity with MDL.

OK, thanks for that. I'm willing to bet a good chunk of the 25K devs that have starred this project might want that context, too.

Yea, the infamous "never write" line. That works in some situations and not in others. It is entirely situational as to when to rewrite and when not to. The changes for V2 of MDL were so dramatic it would have been a rewrite anyways doing the in-place upgrade. As everything is in development, it depends.

We will announce these things more in the coming months as things progress. Right now, it is still alpha and isn't something we are pushing too hard to get people using due to that. We're interested in gathering feedback from developers using it to see what their problems are, but as far as getting the mass 25k stars to look over it isn't a goal right now. As it wouldn't be usable for the majority of them.
