When is Kansetsu-waza and Shime-waza legal?

Tachi-waza Tachi-waza • Legal if tori attempts sutemi-waza first (i.e. transitions to ne-waza) before transitioning into technique;
• Cannot go straight into technique from tachi-waza e.g. flying armbar

Ne-waza Tachi-waza • Also legal if both start in ne-waza, then uke stands up to re-enter tachi-waza

What throws are illegal?

  • Daki-age, kani-basami, kawazu-gake for safety concerns (injury to spine, knees, knees respectively).
  • Any throw where you grab or touch below the belt (e.g. te-guruma, kata-guruma etc)

What locks are illegal?

  • Wrist locks
  • Leg locks
  • Uncontrolled shoulder locks
  • Headlocks, neck cranks
  • Body crush (do-jime)

What grips are legal?

Shido

  • Breaking the grip of the opponent with two hands.
  • Avoid Uke’s grip with a blow on his arm or hand.
  • Pulling out the bottom of Uke’s jacket or his own jacket
  • Covering the edge / lapel of the his own jacket preventing the grip of his opponent.
  • Blocking the opponent’s hands.
  • Breaking the grip of the opponent with the knee or leg.

Unconventional Kumi-kata

  • To simplify the refereeing and it’s understanding some of the actions on how to grab the jacket or belt, all unconventional Kumi-kata (pistol grip, pocket grip, belt grip, one side grip, cross grip ...) is allowed by immediate attack.
  • In the case of no immediate attack those grips will be penalized by Shido.

As for what qualifies as 'immediate attack':

Applying of Kumi-kata

  • The time between classic Kumi-kata and making an attack is extended up to 45 seconds as long as there is a positive progression
