Punctuation

“Compounds with more, most, less, least, and very usually open unless ambiguity threatens” (CMS, 7.85).

Follow Chicago's the hyphenation guide for compounds and words formed with prefixes (CMS, 7.85).

When describing how to navigate a menu, use the following punctuation: “Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns”

Ellipses

“An ellipsis is the omission of a word, phrase, line, paragraph, or more from a quoted passage. Such omissions are made of material that is considered irrelevant to the discussion at hand (or, occasionally, to adjust for the grammar of the surrounding text). Chicago style is to indicate such omissions by the use of three spaced periods” (CMS, 13.48).

“What precedes and, normally, what follows the four dots should be grammatically complete sentences as quoted, even if part of either sentence has been omitted” (CMS, 13.51).

Example: “The conservative party . . . is timid, and merely defensive of property. . . . It does not build, nor write, nor cherish the arts, nor foster religion, nor establish schools” (CMS, 13.51).

Titles

Use headline-style capitalization for composition titles.

Blogs

Italicize names of blogs (CMS, 14.246).

Example: Corey Vilhauer’s blog, Eating Elephant

Blog posts and other web pages

Wrap in quotation marks and keep in roman (CMS, 14.246).

Example: In “Adapting Ourselves to Adaptive Content,” Karen McGrane writes . . .

Websites

In general, use roman without quotation marks (CMS, 14.244).

Example: UX Booth
