This online workshop is based on a hands-on workshop developed by Fatima Hussain, Phil Arevalo, David VanInsberghe, and Martin Polz (MIT) and Libusha Kelly (Albert Einstein College of Medicine) and given to University of Central America (Nicaragua) students to introduce statistical and bioinformatic tools for studying biodiversity. Briefly, we assembled a compact curriculum covering DNA barcoding, microbial diversity, introductory statistics, and programming in R. Prior to the workshop, we worked with the students to sequence butterfly and mollusk samples they had collected. We also created mock data of butterfly abundances in different ecosystems within Nicaragua to personalize the statistical tutorials using R Studio.
