Los Angeles Expansion: Safety Concerns

Project Overview

This project was completed as part of MSA 8030: Communicating with Data at Georgia State University.
It aims to analyze crime data in Los Angeles to help a company identify the safest location for a new import/export warehouse on the West Coast. The project also focuses on improving presentation and communication skills by delivering actionable insights and updates to stakeholders effectively.

Dataset

Business Motivation

  • A company is planning an expansion to Los Angeles to strengthen ties with Asian business partners.
  • Safety is a major concern when selecting a prime warehouse location for operations.
  • The goal is to find the area with the lowest crime rate to protect employees and assets.

Key Questions

  1. What are the crime trends in Los Angeles from 2020 to 2023?
  2. Which areas have the lowest crime rates for safe business operations?
  3. What safeguards should the company implement to ensure security?

Methodology

  • Data Cleaning & Preprocessing: Handling missing values, formatting, and data consistency.
  • Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA): Identifying crime trends, patterns, and geographical hotspots.
  • Visualization: Charts, heatmaps, and reports to support findings.
  • Weekly Updates to Stakeholders: Providing clear, concise progress updates and actionable insights.
