About the PR

What it says on the tin. Borg role time requirements adjusted to 12h to be inline with pilot. Currently impossible to join as a borg outside of through ghost roles.

As far as I can recall, the last time this was brought up, the rationale behind borg removal was that borgs weren't fun and added little. With #2766 and upstream's chassis selection, borg gameplay is likely in a reasonable state for Frontier Station.

Worth considering: should this be extended to any other spawn stations? Shuttles?

Why / Balance

Borgs good.

How to test

Start as a borg. Choose a chassis. Wow!

I'd be happy to add a Borg spawn to the dispatch. I think at the very least it would be a good experiment.

Does the dispatch have a charger?

I already have in my old notes to make borg slots on the Metastable II, looking forward to this

It does not. If it's seemed reasonable I feel it would be appropriate and fine to add some.

Let's start with "is this reasonable?" before "should anywhere else have this?" before "let's map what those places need". Not trying to present this as a settled issue.

I think its fine, but it does still lock you out of a pretty big part of what makes Frontier, Frontier, which is the fact that you do not have a bank account as a borg, and are also unable to fly ships.

and are also unable to fly ships.

Borgs has been able to fly ships for some time now, This is even possible on live servers.

Personally not a fan. This bypasses the normal process of having to research and build borgs. The only way you can get a free borg right now AFAIK is to find them with corrupted laws on wrecks.

If this was to go through I think it should be limited to a very small number of slots at most. Maybe 1-2 to act as station-employees, as to not destroy the purpose of building borgs for science ships. Not sure if there's a way to prevent the SR from being able to add more borg slots code-wise.

In my 700 hours of frontier I can count the number of times someone has taken a borg spot on one hand, coz it’s a ghost role probably

Really? I see them taken relatively often. I take them myself sometimes too, and sometimes other people have beat me to it :P

It could be that you're just not building them/around people that are building them, or if you're trying during lowpop

The counterpoint is this - if I want to play cyborg, if I find it fun, why should I have to wait for someone to actually build a chassis? If I'm really not a fan of the person who built the cyborg, do I want to be tied with that player? The fact the cad has a freebie borg should imply that waiting for people to build borgs isn't reliable. We had borg slots on ships before, and they were fine. This [solution] is reasonable, and allows for more player agency.

With the fact that chassis are essentially equivalent now, the [three] things you can still use to upgrade borgs as a scientist are modules (again, still need to review what's in what module), better components for those modules where they're swappable, and power cells. Selling a possible ghost role on the hunch that, "trust me bro, it'll be great" only for whoever takes it to pick a chassis you're not interested in at all isn't fantastic either.

Maybe 1-2 to act as station-employees, as to not destroy the purpose of building borgs for science ships.

Maybe, sure, but that's a different role with different supervisors, and possibly even a dedicated lawset.

I do not believe I have ever seen a single borg on Frontier. Between availability, jank and the people challenges actually putting a borg together and getting a person in there struggled against a number of filters.

I am glad to see that the mechanical and logistical challenges are being addressed and that we might get a chance to see some meaningful player access to provide feedback on how these systems feel and act in practice.
