Interest Group Annual Report

Convener(s):

  • Antonio Mauro Saraiva, saraiva(at)usp.br
  • Jen Hammock, hammockj(at)si.edu

Submitted: 2021/12/28

Phase of work:

  • Figure out and use a robust theory of biological interactions, including food webs and network ecology concepts.
  • Landscaping review: collect information of available resources about species interaction data, study cases and standard development, creating a list and providing a detailed description of functionalities, advantages and disadvantages of each resource.
  • Share bibliography references (articles, reports, documents etc.) between collaborators to enrich discussions and promote a standardisation of species data.
  • Create a core standard for species interaction data.
  • Development of conceptual models for data aggregation

Activities:

  • Primary mode(s) of collaboration: GitHub issue tracker and regular meetings (every 15 days).
  • Since June of 2021 the IG members have engaged into virtual meetings every 15 days to discuss activities and progresses. Active participants:
    • Annie Simpson - US Geological Survey
    • Antonio Mauro Saraiva - Universidade de São Paulo
    • Debora Drucker - Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA)
    • Dmitry Schigel - Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), Secretariat
    • Filipi Soares - Universidade de São Paulo
    • Fransciso E. Fonturbel - Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso
    • José Augusto Salim - Universidade de São Paulo
    • Jorrit Poelen - Global Biotic Interactions
    • Leonardo R. Jorge, Biology Centre, Czech Academy of Sciences
    • Maarten Trekels, Meise Botanic Garden, Meise, Flanders

    • Prabha Prabhakar - Strand Life Sciences
    • Quentin Groom - Botanic Garden Meise
    • Rafael Barros Pereira Pinheiro, Department of Animal Biology, Institute of Biology, University of Campinas
  • Interactions data review: 392 datasets contained biological interactions data were reviewed in order to analyze potential use cases and schema/formats used https://github.com/tdwg/interaction/blob/master/docs/plan/step2.md
  • Definition of the minimum set of terms needed to document biological interactions https://github.com/tdwg/interaction/issues/24
  • Development of a draft schema to share and document biological interactions https://github.com/tdwg/interaction/issues/24

Plans for next calendar year:

  • Finish the schema for sharing biological interactions. (first quarter of 2022)
  • Search for collaboration with other IG's (January of 2022)
  • Continue the regular meetings and invite more participants from other communities (e.g. outside TDWG) (2022)
  • Development of a document of Guidelines to share biological interactions data using DwC (first quarter of 2022)
  • Review of use cases related to e-DNA and microorganism interactions (second quarter of 2022)
