Our initial interest was directed towards exploring the roles of the various functional groups present in the active compound OSTBS83. The first set of compounds were designed and synthesised by Jessica Baiget Gonzalez at the University of Sydney, under the supervision of Professor Matthew Todd, in collaboration with GSK Tres Cantos.

The aim of this study was to answer three key questions:

  1. Is the hydroxyl group important for activity?
  2. Is the trichlorinated system essential and if not, which chlorine atoms can be replaced without loss of activity?
  3. Is the morpholine ring involved in activity and can it be exchanged for another amine?
